Psychological Benefits of a Healthy Diet

The foods you eat can affect how your brain functions, and can alter both your mood and behavior, according to the Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders or EMD. When you are hungry you may become short-tempered or impatient. Eating a satisfying meal can leave you feeling relaxed and content. When your brain is deprived of proper vitamins, minerals and other nutrients such as protein, your problem-solving abilities may wane and you may experience memory lapses. Eating a healthy diet has a number of psychological benefits.

Promotes Brain Health

Certain foods that are part of a nutritionally balanced diet seem to protect brain cells and may lower the risk of stroke and heart disease, reports the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dark-skinned vegetables and fruits typically contain large amounts of antioxidants. Examples include broccoli, beets, spinach, kale, onion, red bell pepper, blueberries, blackberries, oranges, red grapes, prunes and raisins.

Other brain-healthy foods include omega-3 rich fish such as halibut, salmon and tuna. Certain nuts such almonds, pecans and walnuts support proper brain function due to their high vitamin E content.

Reduces Anxiety

A healthy diet can make you feel better and may help diminish anxiety, according to the Mayo Clinic. Increasing your intake of complex carbohydrates such as whole grains may boost serotonin levels in your brain, which can help calm your nerves. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that affects sleep, mood and memory.

Helps Ward off Depression

Eating healthy meals can have a positive impact on your mood. In fact, a well-balanced diet can reduce stress and help prevent depression when it’s accompanied with adequate sleep and relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga, notes the University of Michigan Health System, or UMHS.

Feelings of depression can range from mild to severe. If you have been feeling down for more than two weeks, talk to your health care provider. You may be suffering from clinical depression, and may require medications or therapy.

Relieves PMS Symptoms

A healthy diet that limits the amount of salt, sugar and caffeine may help diminish the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, PMS. Approximately one-third of pre-menopausal women suffer from PMS, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The psychological symptoms of PMS may include anxiety, irritability, moodiness, aggression and problems concentrating.

With all this said; Why not also take advantage of the best Immune System Booster know to medicine: IMMUNOCAL to supplement your healthy diet and boost your Glutathione Levels in your body!

Immunocal     Immunocal Still Clinical Trials and Historical Research for Immunocal.

Research began in 1978 at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Gustavo Bounous and his staff at the immunology department, discovered a natural food source that dramatically increased the levels of glutathione in animal tissues and organs.

After the original discovery of the effects of this whey protein supplement, back in 1978 and futher understanding that the whey must remain in it’s un-denatured, unheated, natural and delicate state, several clinical trials were conducted around the world to investigate the effects of this natural food source, which was eventually named Immunocal, on the immune systems of mammals, including real human studies.

There are currently 37 completed clinical trials; I have posted a few here.

DESCRIPTION and CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

IMMUNOCAL is a U.S. patented natural food protein concentrate in the FDA category of GRAS (generally recognized as safe) which assists the body in maintaining optimal concentrations of glutathione (GSH) by supplying the precursors required for intracellular glutathione synthesis. It is clinically proven to raise glutathione values (Lands et al, 1999).

Glutathione is a tripeptide made intracellularly from its constituent amino acids L-glutamate, L-cysteine and glycine. The sulfhydryl (thiol) group (SH) of cysteine serves as a proton donor and is responsible for the biological activity of glutathione. Provision of this amino acid is the rate-limiting factor in glutathione synthesis by the cells since cysteine is relatively rare in foodstuffs and furthermore, if released as the free amino acid, is toxic and spontaneously catabolized in the gastrointestinal tract and blood plasma.

Immunocal is a bovine whey protein isolate specially prepared so as to provide a rich source of bioavailable cysteine. Following digestion, the cysteine remains as the stable form cystine (2 molecules of cysteine linked by disulfide bond) and glutamylcystine. After absorption, these dipeptides travel safely in the blood stream and readily enter the cells to release free cysteine for intracellular glutathione synthesis.

Immunocal can thus be viewed as a cysteine delivery system. The disulphide bond in cystine is pepsin and trypsin resistant but may be split by heat, low pH or mechanical stress releasing free cysteine. When subject to heat or shearing forces (inherent in most extraction processes), the fragile disulfide bonds within the peptides are broken and the bioavailability of cysteine is greatly diminished.
Glutathione is a tightly regulated intracellular constituent and is limited in its production by negative feedback inhibition of its own synthesis through the enzyme gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase, thus greatly minimizing any possibility of overdosage.
Glutathione has multiple functions:

1. It is the major endogenous antioxidant produced by the cells, participating directly in the neutralization of free radicals and reactive oxygen compounds, as well as maintaining exogenous antioxidants such as vitamins C and E in their reduced (active) forms.

2. Through direct conjugation, it detoxifies many xenobiotics (foreign compounds) and carcinogens, both organic and inorganic.

3. It is essential for the immune system to exert its full potential, e.g. (1) modulating antigen presentation to lymphocytes, thereby influencing cytokine production and type of response (cellular or humoral) that develops, (2) enhancing proliferation of lymphocytes thereby increasing magnitude of response, (3) enhancing killing activity of cytotoxic T cells and NK cells, and (4) regulating apoptosis, thereby maintaining control of the immune response.

4. It plays a fundamental role in numerous metabolic and biochemical reactions such as DNA synthesis and repair, protein synthesis, prostaglandin synthesis, amino acid transport and enzyme activation. Thus, every system in the body can be affected by the state of the glutathione system, especially the immune system, the nervous system, the gastrointestinal system and the lungs.

Indications and Usage

IMMUNOCAL is a natural food supplement and as such is limited from stating medical claims per se. Statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. As such, this product is thus not intended to diagnose, cure, prevent or treat any disease.
Glutathione augmentation is a strategy developed to address states of glutathione deficiency, high oxidative stress, immune deficiency, and xenobiotic overload in which glutathione plays a part in the detoxification of the xenobiotic in question. Glutathione deficiency states include, but are not limited to: HIV/AIDS, chemical and infectious hepatitis, prostate and other cancers, cataracts, Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, radiation poisoning, malnutritive states, arduous physical stress, aging, and has been associated with sub-optimal immune response. Many clinical pathologies are associated with oxidative stress and are elaborated upon in numerous medical references.

Low glutathione is also strongly implicated in wasting and negative nitrogen balance (Droge and Holm, 1997), notably as seen in cancer, AIDS, sepsis, trauma, burns and even athletic overtraining. Glutathione supplementation can oppose this process and in AIDS, for example, result in improved survival rates (Herzenberg et al, 1997). Read the rest of this entry

Victims & Survivors of Cancer

Orange Kidney cancer Wristbands Victims & Survivors of Cancer

Hello Everyone, This is going to be a THREE PART POST, this being the first on Cancer and what it can do to you and what you can do to IT!!

Look around the room, one in every two males and one in every three females will have a chance of developing cancer in their lifetime. This is a current American Cancer Society statistic. Cancer is an equal opportunity employer. It affects children, teenagers, and adults. It does not discriminate. There are over one hundred different types of cancer in the world today.

Good Evening, my name is Mick Hastings. I am a fifty one old father of 2 grown children. I have been a Electronics Engineer in the Army for Patriot Missiles, a Network Engineer and Quality Engineer for Comtek Industries, a 2 time business owner as a consultant, and now a Masters student in Psychology. Oh, and by the way, I’m a cancer survivor. The definition of a cancer survivor is anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer and is alive today. However, once you have cancer, you always have cancer.

By the end of this speech you will understand the difference between a cancer victim and a cancer survivor.

I have become an expert in this field not by choice but by chance. I was diagnosed with stage three Clear Cell Carcinoma in January of 2008. Cancer is staged or rated, you know like a TV show, from one to four one being the lowest and four being the highest. However, highest in this rating system is not the best.

After surgery I had a series of intense radiation treatments. A happy side effect of treatment was radiation burns down to my bones on my right side where they removed my kidney.

This might be a good time to point out a misconception about cancer…”If you have cancer you die.” Guess what I’m still here. Oh and by the way cancer is not catchy!

My speech will be divided into two parts:

  1. Cancer Victims
  2. Cancer Survivors

Victims

When you are first diagnosed with cancer you are in the doctor’s office. He says, “Mick you have cancer.” You say…nothing.

This is the word that you remember your parents saying in a whisper, “cancer.”

After the doctor says the “C” word everything else fades to black. Somewhere in the background there is a constant buzzing. Afterward you discover that was the oncologist discussing “staging,” no…Not of a Broadway show….your cancer; your treatments, chemotherapy, radiation, percentages, medication, and on and on. All you can think is, “why me?”

Cancer victim seems an accurate term. After the dust settles, and it does settle, one begins to think: “there are two ways to handle this…you can be a victim or a survivor.”

Survivors

The first thing that I realized is that a survivor is a victim with an attitude. Well I developed the attitude and I liked the idea of being a survivor. Besides I decided that dead is not much fun. I could have a choice, a very important condition, when you have cancer because cancer seems to take away your choices. I could take back some form of control in my life.

Now surviving is a state of mind. Despite moments, hours, and sometimes days of sadness and pain you should never lose the ability to laugh at some of the absurdity of cancer and cancer treatments. Like hair…one of the common and lovely side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss. I met a women who denied treatment because she thought that she would look terrible bald. I looked at her in amazement and before I could think I blurted out that she would look worse dead!

Now when it comes to doctors…this is an extremely important relationship…because you hope that he knows enough to save your life. Control here is a big issue. He knows what he’s doing and you don’t have a clue what you are doing.

Well guess what, you become a quick study! Ask lots of questions. If your doctor doesn’t know the answers there are a great many other sources. There are books on everything you never wanted to know about cancer. There are books on everything from alternative treatment to vitamins. There is the miracle of the computer age, the internet. On the WWW you can tap into current trials and the most up-to-date treatments. There are numerous cancer hot-lines and support groups. These groups are compiled of cancer survivors who interact with each other on a personal level and are full of encouragement and support. People who are in these groups usually exchange phone numbers and are the ones you can turn to at one in the morning when you need a friendly voice to share those darkest fears. And, there are other doctors. Become pro active in your treatments and recovery. Take part! This is your life. You only get one chance and there are no make-ups!

I hope that if you are ever in this situation you will choose to be a survivor and not a victim!

After a while the differences between victims and survivors become clear.

  1. Being a victim is a state of body…Becoming a survivor is a state of mind.
  2. A victim fears losing her hair…A survivor knows that being bald is not the point…besides bald is beautiful!
  3. A victim is amazed at all of the tears…A survivor never leaves home without his Kleenex.
  4. A victim seldom laughs… A survivor tries to find humor in everything he can even though it is sometimes bizarre.

And finally, from the moment we are diagnosed we are victims… Unless we choose to be survivors!
